Dorcas & I were supposed to fly from Lima to Miami on Sunday night but, after a 2-hour delay, our flight was cancelled due to mechanical problems. OK, that's frustrating but understandable. Better to cancel the flight than to board an airplane that might take a quick nosedive into the Pacific.
But then all chaos broke out as 300 surly passengers all crowded around the American Airlines counters at the airport, screaming for re-connections, seat upgrades, hotel & meal vouchers, & various other types of pounds of flesh. AA had a grand total of 3 people trying to assist 300 angry, bleary-eyed passengers after midnight. There really wasn't even a line. It was more like a herd. Some people even saw the sun rise as they waited in line for their re-route.
We wound up hanging out w/ mission groups from Canada & Germany as we waited. We shared our tales of woe in English, Spanish, French, and German. Both groups missed connecting flights to Canada & Germany as a result of the AA Lima cancellation.
Fortunately, everyone in our American/Peruvian/Canadian/German group kept their calm during the highly-frustrating event.
Lesson learned: If you're going to be public w/ your Christianity at the airport, then you'd also better keep cool when they cancel your flight!
